Private Vaults

Isolated wallets. Pattern-gated.

A pattern unlocks a second space on the phone. Everyday Home, Assets, and Activity do not list what lives there — until you open it.

What it is not

Privacy. Not undetectable.

  • The app is not invisible on the device.
  • On-chain transactions cannot be hidden after they are broadcast.
  • Support cannot reconstruct a forgotten pattern.

Why it exists

Not every wallet belongs on Home.

Derivation can put funds off default indices. Private Vaults solve a different problem: the phone in your hand. Everyday screens should not advertise every wallet you hold — without pretending the app vanished or the chain went dark.

Unlock with a pattern, and vault wallets appear. Lock it, and Home, Assets, and Activity look like a standard wallet again. That is the feature. Not invisibility.

Use it with derivation if you want both: a high account index for restore scanners, and a vault so a glance at the phone does not show the size of what you keep.

The visible wallet

Home, Assets, and Activity remain a standard wallet — the space you use every day.

Why you need it

You still need a surface you can open without ceremony: balances, send, receive. Private Vaults are optional isolation, not a requirement to use GreyWallet. Everyday funds stay in view. The rest wait behind the pattern.

The everyday wallet is not a decoy product story. It is the same HD wallet you created or imported. Vaults do not rewrite that account. They keep selected wallets out of those three views until unlock.

[02]

The pattern

A private pattern unlocks Private Vaults. The raw pattern is not stored for recovery. A different pattern creates a separate space on this device.

Why you need it

Think of it as a door code on a second room in the same app. Someone who picks up an unlocked Home screen does not see vault wallets. They would still need the pattern — and you never send that pattern to support, chat, or a screenshot.

The pattern is a local unlock secret, not a cloud password and not a recovery phrase. Grey Holdings cannot reset it. Forget it and that vault space is inaccessible on this path. Write it offline, separate from the phrase if you use both.

What stays hidden

Wallets in Private Vaults do not appear in Home, Assets, or Activity until the pattern is entered. Device-level privacy — not undetectability.

Why you need it

This is the reason most people want the feature: shared phones, travel, a glance over the shoulder, a partner who should not see every balance. Everyday UI simply does not list those wallets until you open the vault.

UI omission is not chain privacy. Explorers still show broadcasts. The app icon remains. Physical access plus enough time is a different threat. Use vaults for device-level separation; use derivation index/path if you also want funds off default restore scanners.

Separate spaces

Optional space names are visible only while a vault is open. A different pattern is a different space on this device.

Why you need it

One pattern for long-term holdings, another if you ever need a second isolated set. Names help you while it is open — they are not advertised on the locked Home screen.

Do not treat extra patterns as infinite plausible deniability. They are additional local spaces. Operational security still means: phrase backup, pattern backup, no secrets in email.

Keep the pattern

Offline. Never in a ticket.

Optional space names are visible only while a private vault is open. Never share the pattern — including with support. If you forget it, that space is not reconstructable. Same class of failure as a lost recovery phrase.
